Find my route
From the start at the springs and spas of Chaudfontaine, you are immediately immersed in the atmosphere of three major rivers in Wallonia, the Vesdre, the Meuse and the Sambre. Along this route, you will appreciate the safety of the RAVeL and gain an overview of the extensive inland waterway and post-industrial heritage of these three valleys and the cultural diversity to be found in Wallonia in cities such as Liège, Namur and Charleroi.
When you reach the Upper Sambre, the landscapes become rural and you find yourself surrounded by the restful atmosphere of pleasure boats. So you go off in search of lock keepers and unexpected water creatures and birdlife.
Your route starts on the Esplanade de Chaudfontaine, right next to the springs and the associated educational park. You will follow the valleys of the Vesdre and the Ourthe to Liège.
Not far from the old fortified city of Huy, along the RAVeL on the right bank of the Meuse, stands Andenne, the city of the bear, where stone, water and wood remind us how the wealth of this region depends on these natural elements.
Leaving Namur, the route of this stage, which follows its own path, runs through a wide variety of superb landscapes. You go alongside the Sambre, a calm, winding river. A series of locks and bridges lie in the heart of the countryside.
From Charleroi onwards, the industrial sites along the Sambre RAVeL quickly give way to pastoral landscapes. The Sambre becomes wilder, with a variety of fauna and flora.
The stage starts not far from Thuin railway station, on the RAVeL along the left bank of the Sambre. Here you can discover much of the history of riverboats and reach Erquelinnes via the locks running along the water.
