De Braine-l'Alleud/Waterloo à Aix-la-Chapelle/Aachen (D)

A dismal plain will not be your fate as you cross Wallonia from west to east starting from the suburbs of Brussels. The first part of this route packed with remarkable stories and architectures runs through the breadbasket of this beautiful region. You wander along quiet little roads through Waterloo, Wavre, Jodoigne, Hannut and Waremme to the flamboyant city of Liège.

The second part of your journey takes you towards Aix-la-Chapelle/Aachen (D). You follow one of oldest and most mythical sections of the RAVeL, Line 38. Along this path you discover the bocages of the Pays de Herve region in a bright, green setting. The landscape can be admired and appreciated from numerous beauty spots. All along the way, crops of sun-kissed hops will make your mouth water in anticipation of a delicious cold beer, to be savoured with moderation.

De Braine-l'Alleud/Waterloo à Wavre (stage 1)
On the minor roads of the Brabant Ardennes

This stage starts at Braine-l’Alleud railway station , near the Butte du Lion or Lion’s mound in Waterloo. Here you can experience the Brabant atmosphere, with its typical villas. The urban setting soon makes way for a more peaceful environment, such as the Sonian Forest, the Solvay regional estate and the Château de La Hulpe park.

De Wavre à Jodoigne (stage 2)
On the minor roads of Hesbaye

Set in the heart of Walloon Brabant, not far from Brussels, Wavre is your starting point for this second stage. Leaving the sports complex, you soon make your way out of the city to pedal along quiet country roads.

De Jodoigne à Hannut (stage 3)
On the minor roads of the Hesbaye and the RAVeL of Lines 142 and 147

From the starting point in Jodoigne, you follow the RAVeL of Lines 142 and 147 for two-thirds of this stage. You cross the Hesbaye region, where cereal crops are ever present, sometimes interspersed with groves of trees, sometimes edged by peaceful villages.

Starting from Hannut, an important place in the Duchy of Brabant during the Middle Ages, your route towards the city of the prince-bishops takes you through the pastoral landscapes of the Hesbaye.

De Liège à Herve (stage 5)
On the RAVeL of the Ourthe and Line 38

Your stage starts on the RAVeL on the right bank of the Meuse in Parc de la Boverie with its future International Centre of Art and Culture. Having followed the Ourthe valley for a few kilometres to Chênée, a short stretch in road traffic takes you to the Line 38 RAVeL, with a beautiful view of the imposing Notre-Dame de Chèvremont basilica.

De Herve à Aix-la-Chapelle/Aachen (D) (stage 6)
On the Lines 38 and 39 RAVeL

The old No 38 railway line, one of the first of its kind, is a symbol of the RAVeL and its friendliness. It took years of effort by local people before the public authorities finally began to set up the line. This work is continuing today and will do so in the years to come.
